Book Summary

Town on the Telly looks back at all the Ipswich Town games played live on television up to the end of the 2021/22 season.

Throughout the main part of the book, I share my memories as a Town fan of over 40 years of watching the games whether at the ground, or on TV, that have been screened live by the BBC, ITV, Channel 5 or Sky (no iFollow, red button or any other type of streaming – legal or illegal).

Town legend Matt Holland provides the foreword, whilst there are some personal memories and stories from myself including detailing our progress along the way in between each live game for many of the seasons.

There are match details for all games screened to date including the opposition, score, date of game, kick-off time, competition, venue, attendance, TV channel, name of Ipswich Manager, Referee’s name, line-ups for both Ipswich and the opposition, and times of goals and substitutions.

The latter part of the book looks back on the key dates, milestones and TV records.

If you are looking for that game that was screened live but cannot remember its details, or even just curious at which games have been shown live on television and memories of the game, then this book is for you.

All the eras from Sir Bobby Robson, John Lyall, George Burley, Joe Royle, Jim Magilton, Roy Keane, Ian McParland, Paul Jewell, Mick McCarthy, Paul Hurst, John McGreal and Kieran McKenna, are reviewed in detail.

A special thank you to Brad Lloyd of Glory Days Artwork for illustrating the book cover. Brad’s work can be found at: Glorydaysartwork.co.uk.

Also, thank you to Matt Holland for writing the foreword.

The book is published by JMD Media/DB Publishing who have already published Ipswich Town related books written by Dave Allard & Neal Manning, Nick Garnham, Carl Marston, Terry Hunt and Mel Henderson.

Reviews received so far:

“Have just this second finished Karl’s first book “Town On The Telly” and can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a great read and an authentic account of what it’s like to follow Ipswich Town.”

“The author’s passion for the club shines through from start to finish. Ipswich’s unpredictable nature in front of the cameras means this meticulously researched book takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The good, the bad and the downright ugly – it’s all here. Best read on the sofa – yes, the same sofa you probably hid behind while non-league Lincoln dumped Mick McCarthy’s team out of the FA Cup!”

“Karl really gets the memories flowing especially for older town fans. Helped me put so many details in place. Thoroughly enjoyed looking back at our games.”

“This brings backs lots of happy memories and helps fill in some gaps from matches enjoyed in various pubs over the years. A great read for any town fan. COYB.”

“5 stars.”

“Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Brought lots of memories back. Even though more defeats than wins. Enjoyed looking at what the teams were when playing. Check out Karl’s other books as well.”

“I just wanted to say that I loved your book and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I took it on holiday last week and read it all on the first day! When I first heard about it, I thought it might be just a book of stats (not the end of the world because; those stats ARE in there, and an anorak like me loves stats). The stories and the memories in the book are great. It’s a bit scary how many of those games I actually attended!”

“Brilliant book, thoroughly enjoyed reading all of it, recommend it to any Town fan.”
